Barium and Gastrointestinal Contrast Studies
Contrast studies show the movement and outline of selected parts of the digestive tract. The exact examination depends on your symptoms and the referring clinician’s question.
Your Clinical Care Pathway
For an upper gastrointestinal examination, you usually drink contrast while X-ray images are obtained in different positions.
A swallowing assessment may require a different protocol.
The team explains the test selected for you.
Expected benefits and limitations
The study may identify narrowing, structural problems or abnormal passage of contrast. It cannot replace endoscopy or biopsy when tissue assessment is needed. Constipation and pale stools may follow barium; aspiration is a concern in susceptible patients.
