Protein in Urine and Glomerular Diseases
The glomeruli are the tiny filters inside the kidneys. Disease affecting them can cause protein or blood in the urine, swelling and reduced kidney function. We assess nephrotic and nephritic syndromes, IgA nephropathy, FSGS, membranous nephropathy and minimal change disease.
Your Clinical Care Pathway
Assessment may include urine microscopy, protein measurement, kidney tests and selected immune tests.
A kidney biopsy or genetic test may be needed before choosing treatment.
Medicines depend on the specific diagnosis; immune-suppressing treatment is not appropriate for every cause.
Expected benefits and limitations
Treatment aims to reduce protein leakage, control swelling and preserve kidney function. Some diseases enter remission; others recur or progress. Response is usually judged over repeated reviews, not a single urine sample.
