Echocardiography

An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to assess the heart’s pumping function, chambers, valves and surrounding fluid. It can support assessment of breathlessness, hypertension and heart–kidney problems.

Your Clinical Care Pathway

1

For a standard transthoracic study, gel and a probe are placed on the chest while you lie in different positions.

2

The clinician interprets measurements and images together with your symptoms and medical history.

Expected benefits and limitations

You receive a report that can guide treatment or further cardiac testing. Image quality varies, and a normal resting echo does not exclude coronary artery disease or every cause of chest pain.
