Kidney and Bladder Ultrasound and Doppler
Ultrasound uses sound waves to assess kidney and bladder structure without ionizing radiation. Doppler adds information about blood flow when needed.
Your Clinical Care Pathway
Gel is applied to the skin and a probe is moved over the abdomen or flank.
You may be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly or empty your bladder so residual urine can be measured.
Expected benefits and limitations
The scan can identify enlargement, cysts, urinary-tract dilatation and some stones. It does not exclude every stone, early kidney disease or all vascular problems. Further imaging may be needed.
