Liver Shear Wave Elastography
Liver elastography measures liver stiffness to help assess the likelihood of scarring in chronic liver disease. It is a non-invasive ultrasound-based assessment.
Your Clinical Care Pathway
You lie on the examination couch while measurements are taken through a probe over the right upper abdomen.
Results are interpreted alongside the cause of liver disease, blood tests and measurement quality.
Expected benefits and limitations
The result can help decide whether specialist review or further tests are needed. Stiffness is not a direct diagnosis of fibrosis stage: inflammation, congestion, cholestasis and recent eating can influence readings. Different devices and techniques use different thresholds.
